North-East Governors Reaffirm Commitment to Security, Agriculture, and Regional Development at Jalingo Meeting

By: Kamal Hammajo | August 30th, 2025

The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has pledged renewed commitment to tackling security, humanitarian challenges, agriculture, and energy poverty across the subregion. The resolution came at the end of its 12th meeting held in Jalingo, Taraba State, on August 29-30, 2025.

The Forum, which comprises the Governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States, said it remained focused on strengthening cooperation in matters relating to security, social development, and economic integration of the subregion.

In a communiqué signed by its Chairman, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, the Governors acknowledged progress in the fight against insurgency but noted that the region “is still confronted by daunting humanitarian and infrastructural challenges.”

On climate risks, the governors raised concern over predictions of severe flooding and urged proactive measures, including sensitization of residents in flood-prone areas. They also appealed for urgent Federal Government and North-East Development Commission (NEDC) support to repair damaged infrastructure, particularly bridges.

The Forum expressed worry over the rising cost of agricultural inputs, warning that it could reduce food production next year. It called for increased subsidies to farmers and strong preparations for dry season farming to avert a possible food crisis.

To boost trade and economic cooperation, the governors announced that the North-East Trade Fair will be held in December 2025 in Maiduguri, in partnership with the North-East Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NECCIMA).

On energy, the Forum reaffirmed its commitment to renewable solutions and directed its Power and Energy Committee to design an integrated subregional power masterplan. According to the communiqué, this is part of efforts to “subdue energy poverty” in the region.

The Governors also congratulated University of Maiduguri on its golden jubilee and pledged support for the Institution’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and the relaunch of its Endowment Fund in November.

The Forum announced that its next meeting will hold in Maiduguri, Borno State, from December 12-14, 2025.
