Senator Kashim Shettima, Nigeria’s current Vice President, is a man whose rise in public service has been marked by depth, discipline, and dedication. From his early years as an academic to his impactful role as Governor of Borno State and now as Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Shettima’s journey reflects resilience and leadership shaped by real experience.

EARLY LIFE AND ACADEMIC CAREER

Before venturing into politics and banking, Shettima began his career in the academic world. He served as a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri. During this time, he contributed to research and teaching, building a reputation for intellectual rigor and discipline.

TRANSITION INTO BANKING

In 1993, he moved into the financial sector, starting with the now-defunct Commercial Bank of Africa in Lagos. He later worked with African International Bank and then Zenith Bank, where he rose to the position of General Manager. By 2007, his success in banking was evident, but it was his calling to public service that would soon define his legacy.

POLITICAL CAREER: Leadership In Borno State

Shettima's political career began in earnest in 2007 when he was appointed Commissioner for Finance in Borno State. Over the next four years, he also served in key ministries such as Education, Agriculture, Health, and Local Governments, earning public confidence through his administrative skills and policy foresight.

In 2011, following the death of the initial ANPP governorship candidate, Shettima was nominated as the replacement. He went on to win the election with over 531,000 votes. As Governor of Borno State (2011–2019), he led during one of the most turbulent periods in the state's history, marked by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Despite the crisis, Shettima’s tenure was notable for bold reconstruction efforts. He rebuilt schools, hospitals, and homes destroyed by insurgents and invested heavily in education and human capital. His leadership won both local and international commendation for courage and foresight.

ROLE IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

In 2019, Shettima transitioned to the Senate as the representative for Borno Central. His time in the National Assembly reinforced his role as a national statesman, respected for his measured contributions and loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

VICE PRESIDENCY

On 1 March 2023, following the announcement of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President-elect, Kashim Shettima emerged as Nigeria’s Vice President-elect. He was sworn in on 29 May 2023 at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

As Vice President, Shettima chairs the country’s economic planning team and plays a key advisory role to the President. His background in economics, governance, and crisis management makes him a vital pillar in Nigeria’s current leadership.

CONCLUSION

From the halls of the university to the helm of national leadership, Vice President Kashim Shettima’s life is a story of service, intellect, and steady growth. His political career, defined by resilience in governance and commitment to rebuilding lives, continues to shape Nigeria’s future at the highest level.
