Gombe Govt Clears Retirees’ Gratuity Backlog Up to 2023

Kamal Hamamjo Adam | 20th December, 2023

The Gombe State Government has continued its effort to clear the backlog of retirees’ gratuities, with payments now covering retirees from 2019, including the most recent batch from 2021 to 2023.

The State Auditor-General and Chairman of the Gratuity Payment Committee, Mohammad Buba Gombe, confirmed that the government has made significant progress in settling outstanding payments, following approval by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

Speaking to journalists in Gombe, Buba Gombe said the payment exercise is ongoing and has already been completed for Local Government retirees, while payments for state retirees are nearing completion.

According to him, gratuities for state retirees from 2021 and 2022 have been fully paid, with payments for 2023 currently underway.

He noted that the exercise has been met with widespread appreciation from retirees, many of whom expressed joy and gratitude to the present administration for fulfilling its commitment to workers’ welfare.

“Some retirees cry for joy, others pray for the government, while many openly express appreciations for the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya,” he said.

Some beneficiaries, including Jibrin Sarkin Shanu and Saratu Musa Malala, described the payment as timely and reassuring, especially for those who retired in 2023.

Jibrin Sarkin Shanu said he was grateful to the state government for approving and releasing his gratuity, adding that the payment committee handled the process in a transparent and cordial manner.

Similarly, Saratu Musa Malala expressed happiness over the unexpected early payment of her gratuity, praying for continued guidance and protection for the governor and the state leadership.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya approved the release of ₦8.2 billion for the payment of gratuities to 3,204 retirees from both state and local government services for the period covering 2021 to 2023.

The development is part of the state government’s broader commitment to clearing inherited liabilities and improving the welfare of retirees in Gombe State.
